Islam 101: Exploring Islamic Mysticism

Challenge Yourself To Connect

During the 10 Days of Connection, challenge yourself to connect across lines of difference. There are many ways to do that: share a meal with someone you wouldn’t normally cross paths with, read a book or watch a movie that highlights the beauty of connection, take part in #MiamiWalks to get to know a new neighborhood, etc.! Check out and RSVP to the many opportunities to connect below, and if you’d like to host a connection experience, learn more on the Host page!

Islam is a faith of beauty. This interactive public lecture and discussion will explore how the Islamic faith connected the civilizations of Asia and Africa through beliefs, rituals, practice and aesthetics. Islamic mysticism, also known as Sufism, is a part of Islam that believes in the interconnected nature of all beings.

Join us for a journey into the beautiful history of Islam and how the Islamic faith has contributed to tolerance, understanding and peace for centuries. Light vegan/vegetarian refreshments will be provided.

The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Iqbal Akhtar who is an assistant professor with a dual appointment in the Department of Reiligious Studies and the Department of Politics and International Relations in the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs.

Accessibility: To make this event as accessible as possible to individuals of all different abilities and needs, the following accommodations will be provided: accessibility for anyone with mobility issues, moveable seating for people with disabilities, hosts at the door to assist attendees that require special services, accessible documents for people with visual impairments, signs that list the ingredients of food and beverages and nursing rooms.

Unfortunately, American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters will not be available at the event (but if you’d like to volunteer, reach out!).
