Challenge Yourself To Connect

During the 10 Days of Connection, challenge yourself to connect across lines of difference. There are many ways to do that: share a meal with someone you wouldn’t normally cross paths with, read a book or watch a movie that highlights the beauty of connection, take part in #MiamiWalks to get to know a new neighborhood, etc.! Check out and RSVP to the many opportunities to connect below, and if you’d like to host a connection experience, learn more on the Host page!

Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center have partnered to read Mama’s Nightingale by acclaimed author Edwidge Danticat as part of Haitian Heritage Month.

The book tells the story of Saya’s mother who is sent to an immigration detention center, Saya finds comfort in listening to her mother’s warm greeting on their answering machine. To ease the distance between them while she’s in jail, Mama begins sending Saya bedtime stories inspired by Haitian folklore on a cassette tape. Moved by her mother’s tales and her father’s attempts to reunite their family, Saya writes a story of her own—one that just might bring her mother home for good.

The public reading will be followed by a family community discussion based on ADL’s parent guide created for this story and available online at www.adl.org.

Accessibility: ADL and Sant La seek to make this event as accessible as possible to individuals of all different abilities and needs.
